Artist Judith Cain's work featured in California Home & Design Magazine
Silicon Valley - Chelsea Art Gallery recently kicked off spring with the opening of Bay Area artist Albert Smith's exhibition, Now and Then, a retrospective of his work since 1975. Over 250 persons attended the private view on March 2nd, when the artist spoke with patrons, friends, and family about his work. View event and installation photos here. Smith has been working as an artist in the Bay Area since the early 1950s. He has exhibited internationally and has had solo exhibitions at venues in Tokyo, London, and New York. Recently, Smith has had career retrospectives at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara. His work is part of many important private and corporate collections, notably Chase Manhattan Bank, the Mobil Corporation, and the Stanford University Hospitals. His work has also been incorporated into several institutional collections including the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, the Oakland Museum of Art, the Crocker Museum in Sacramento, and the Achenbach Foundation at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Smith currently resides and works in Atherton with his wife, Barbara. The exhibition is on view through April 1st.
British artist Matthew Radford will be returning to the Bay Area next month for a visit to Palo Alto. Radford had a solo show of new work, Random Empires, at the Gallery last fall after having participated in the critically acclaimed contemporary portraiture exhibit, Face Value, in December of 2005. Radford plans to be in the area before visiting Las Vegas for another solo exhibition in late April. Another of the Gallery's British artists, Judith Cain, has also been making California news. Cain debuted her work at the Gallery in a solo exhibition, Being in Place: Landscapes of Central Asia, which traveled from the Royal Gardens at Kew in London, where is was previously on exhibition to the public. Cain completed the series after her travels to Kazakhstan. One landscape of the Kazakhstan fields was recently featured in an article in California Home and Design Magazine as part of an architectural spotlight on one of the Gallery patron's and private art collector's home in Palo Alto. To learn more about Cain and her work, visit our current exhibition of British contemporary art and read the artist's bio.

Chelsea Art Gallery welcomes British Grand Consul-General Martin Uden
Step into Spring: April 7 - 9
Bay Area artists Kathryn Dunlevie and Klari Reis prepare for May exhibitions
Chelsea Art is pleased to announce the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University has recently acquired one of the Gallerys works. Another Drink to Cold Women by Scottish artist Douglas McDougall (b. 1963, with the drawing in his studio in Camberwell, above) was featured in Face Value, the acclaimed contemporary portraiture exhibition held at the Gallery from December 2005 through January 2006. McDougalls process involves laborious, detailed drawing of a photorealistic quality, but is distinguished by the use of scalpel blades, rubbers, and sandpaper to scrape and tear the surface to create highlights and add texture to the paper. The work is one of McDougalls celebrated Citizenscapes, in which he treats the human face as terrain to be explored and as an image of Man to be reconciled through the viewers physical encounter with the object. The charcoal drawing is now part of the Modern and Contemporary Works on Paper Collection at the Center, and was recommended for acquisition by Dr. Hilarie Faberman, the Robert M. and Ruth L. Halperin Curator for Modern & Contemporary Art.
Among other exciting news, Chelsea Art Gallery welcomed British Grand-Consul General Martin Uden and the British American Business Council on April 5th for an evening of British art and culture.
